About Day of Caring

United Way’s Day of Caring connects hundreds of volunteers to community established 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations throughout Amarillo/Canyon. Day of Caring is a community wide event, and excellent opportunity for volunteers to give back. They will be eager to help in any way they can! Mark your calendar for Friday, April 21!

USEFUL TIPS

Volunteers will arrive at the project location at 9 a.m. and all projects should be completed no later than 4 p.m., unless prior arrangements have been made with the UW and the volunteer company representative.

Please have a backup plan for volunteers in the event of inclement weather.

Volunteers enjoy working hard on projects like reading to children, packing food, landscaping, or painting a service facility. So think out of the box on the projects that you want to submit.

You are welcome to have as many projects as you would like. Please note that we match the projects with the volunteers based on the scope of project and volunteer capacity. To submit your project, please register by filling in the Project Proposal Form.

DAY OF CARING PROJECT PLANNING

Step 1: Identify unmet needs at your agency. Are there projects that haven’t been finished, or even started? Is there something a group of volunteers can accomplish in a few hours?

Step 2: Meet with your Colleagues. Brainstorm with others about your DOC project.

Step 3: Select a project that can be completed in 3-5 hours by a group of volunteers. Examine how complex your project is. Does it require special skills and equipment? Will your project require special permits? Do you need to work around existing activities and client services?

Step 4: Develop a project budget. Ensure you have appropriate supplies on hand so volunteers can complete your DOC project. You may solicit donations from local businesses.

Step 5: Identify who will coordinate the project and how many additional agency representatives you need. Having good onsite support for motivation and direction of volunteers creates success!

Step 6: Submit your project proposal.
